  • (AP) Bloomington PantagraphEducation reform plan gets Illinois House committee OK, “The proposal would make it harder for teachers to go on strike and easier to lose their jobs because of poor performance. Lawmakers, business groups and reformers, and unions announced the agreement nearly a month ago that they believe will mean better teachers in the classroom and an end to learning held hostage by the threat of a strike.”
  • State Journal-RegisterHouse panel adopts ‘hideous’ $1.2 billion cut in human services, “[Committee Chairman] Feigenholtz said the committee had to cut 6.5 percent from the budget for each agency for which it has authority.  That includes the departments of Human Services, Children and Family Services, Healthcare and Family Services, Public Health and Veteran’s Affairs.”
  • Belleville News-DemocratEast St. Louis school superintendent voted out; state assumes oversight of District 189, “[T]he school board voted unanimously to rescind the contract renewal they had given her March 28 for next school year and placed her on paid administrative leave… In addition to placing much of the decision-making of the district in the state’s hands, the agreement also calls for the possible review of all current district finances, curriculum and operations, and the implementation of improvement plans for instruction, staffing, finances and facilities.”
